Butlins Skegness History

Butlins was founded as a holiday camp site in Skegness by Billy Butlin in 1936, who believed British holidaymakers needed a place where there are things for them to do.

It offered chalets by the sea for families to sleep as well as a range of entertainment, amusements and amenities.

Review

This was our second family holiday here and this time it was on a Friday to Monday break. We choose a standard apartment and what we liked about this was it’s close proximity to the skyline pavilion and we were right next to swimming so we could just nip back to change and shower etc. We choose premium dining and it is well worth the added expense- we didn’t enjoy standard food court dining at all because it was basically a school canteen. At premium you have a choice of two restaurants, immense variety and cooking stations where food was cooked to order. The staff in there was lovely and so obliging. The apartment was basic but we only used it as a space to sleep. We had a room last time and I’m so glad we choose an apartment where we could all sit in the living room. Beds so uncomfortable but exactly the same as in the silver rooms we had before. I suspect it would be the same in the gold apartments. All the activities were brilliant as always, we all especially loved the river rapids. Pantomime was excellent and I’d highly recommend it. A great time had by all- we didn’t want to leave.

Just done a 3 night stay at Butlins Skegness, stayed in a gold apartment which was spacious and functional, not going to say it was luxury but it was comfortable. We did the prem dining option, standard is in a plain large building past the other side of the main complex from our apartment where as the premium ( Decks and Yacht Club) are just inside the main tent as you walk in, both are buffet, Decks does a variety of food including chinese and indian where as the Yacht Club is smaller and does roasts but you can sit in any one of them and bring food back from the other as they have connecting doors, there was no queues and they never ran out of anything, we really liked the food and have no complaints but i would not have done the dining plan had i realised Butlins had lots of other nice restaurants on site you pay for on the day. Splash world is amazing and the kids really loved it, queues were small and spent most of the day in there which is a bonus as it kept them away from the arcades. Liked the fairground, a bit small but the go karts were impressive as those at Haven are really slow but these did move a bit however £6 a go does get expensive when paying for 4 karts. We paid for the Sky Bar which didn't work very well, you are guaranteed a seat but it was so hot up there it made you feel ill, downstairs every seat was taken and people standing so if you want to see the show be prepared to come early and queue as for the shows kids loved the panto but the later evening show was a bit flat. Over all i have no major complaints other than the Sky Bar and the kids really want to go again so we will.
